Austin, Texas, band Spoon's earliest releases were nervy and raw, appropriately drawing comparisons to the Pixies' loud-soft-loud signature.

Spoon. They Want My Soul.
Loma Vista Recordings.
Four stars

Twenty years down the track, this eighth album gives a polite nod in that direction, also towards the wily dad-rock of Wilco, but out of respect rather than a paucity of ideas.

It comfortably straddles the line between muscular guitar rock and thoughtful pop, with all tracks cutting it as one, the other, or a deft combination of the two.

The band can thank producers Joe Chiccarelli and Dave Fridmann for giving these songs the treatment they deserve.
