Brooke Elliot is president of the Maniototo Young Farmers, whose 12 to 15 members meet monthly at the Waipiata Hotel.

The 25-year-old is a fencing contractor and does casual shepherding.

What was the best birthday present you ever received, and why?
When I was five or six years old, I was given a pony by my parents. I  had been wanting a pony for a while.

What is your least favourite thing about humanity?
Violence by people towards others.

What is one strong childhood memory?
I remember going mustering with my father and grandfather on horses, when I was about 7 or 8, on Lammermoor Station.
One of my grandfather's sayings was, "When it's sunny down home, it's snowing up top". Sure enough, it was.

If you were going to an island and could only take three things, what  would they be and why?
My fiancé Scott, for company. My dog Lucky, for hunting.
And a bottle of white wine to have with whatever we get or to just sit down with and enjoy the sunset.

You are a new addition to the crayon box. What colour are you, and why?
Pink, because it stands out from the crowd.
