Pam Jones highlights some of the areas to be showcased at the annual IPW travel and trade conference in the United States and finds some special reasons to visit, including on the road less travelled.

1. St Augustine.
On a warm September day in 1565, 800 Spaniards gathered on the shores of a Florida saltmarsh at the site of a large Native American village known as Seloy. The Spanish proclaimed the place they stood would be known as St. Augustine and, 450 years later, the Florida hotspot is one of the region's premier holiday destinations, and ready to celebrate its anniversary in style. A raft of commemorative events is planned, including street festivals and historic reenactments. Beachside or surrounded by Spanish architecture, the parties promise a Latin vibe - one weekend will even feature a special running of the bulls.

2. Santa Monica
Looking for some more action, but reluctant to fork out the high rates prime locations often command? Check out Santa Monica, usually known for its luxury feel but which this year has launched a new budget-friendly "beach chic on a budget'' itinerary that promises not to break the bank. Examples: Ride the Big Blue Bus from Los Angeles International Airport into Downtown Santa Monica for just US$1, take in stunning coastline views with a ride on the Pacific Wheel on the Santa Monica Pier for only US$5 and soak up the sun along Santa Monica's 5.6km of broad, glistening beaches for free.

3. Minnesota.
As well as experiencing a craft beverage boom, the state also boasts the 2015 United States' "coolest small town'', the harbourside settlement of Grant Marais. Check out its coastal charm and then treat yourself to a cold one at one of the state's artisan breweries or distilleries. In autumn, wineries feature grape stomps, harvest festivals and tasting events.

4. Illinois wine country.
Another USA wine hotspot. Who knew? But apparently Illinois' wine industry has exploded in recent years, growing from just 12 wineries in 1997 to more than 100 today. Again, the autumn harvest features a range of festivals and events.

5. The Centre for Civil and Human Rights, Atlanta.
Opened just last year, this new centre connects America's Civil Rights Movement - as well as Atlanta's pivotal role in that journey - to other human rights struggles around the globe, both contemporary and historical. It also features a rotating exhibition of items from The Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr. Collection.

6. Brooklyn.
New York continues as a favourite for tourists but add an extra flavour to your trip by trying out Brooklyn for size as a stand alone destination. Its reputation as being on the cutting-edge of culture, innovation and entertainment, and a growing "Explore Brooklyn'' campaign, has led to a significant increase in the number of travellers visiting the New York neighbourhood. And with more than 4,000 hotel rooms available in Brooklyn and more than a dozen new hotels scheduled to open by 2018, there is no shortage of places to stay.

7. Sedona, Arizona.
Sedona's red rock terrain and variety of trails cater for whatever your fitness level or sense of adventure. Don't forget the camera to record some pretty awe-inspiring views.

8. San Francisco.
Art-lovers should make the peninsula city a must for a dose of innovative art. A range of temporary and permanent light installations illuminates the city, and the world-famous San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is undergoing a major expansion, which will double its exhibition space. Revel in the vision and culture of a city that puts the arts centre stage.

9. Detroit and Daytona.
If you're a petrolhead (which I kind of am), Detroit and Daytona are can't-miss stops on your US itinerary. Cars, culture, gaming, music and sports are showcased in a feast of annual Detroit events, and Daytona Beach and the Daytona International Speedway provide the quintessential motorhead experience. An almost $2 billion project is creating new and upgraded attractions on Daytona Beach, and the One Daytona entertainment complex beside the International Speedway is on its way.

10. Route 66.
Still the ultimate road trip, the romance of travelling the famous route between Los Angeles and Chicago continues to captivate travellers. You'll pass through a cross-section of small-town USA and notch up a milestone driving vacation. Roll down the windows and enjoy.
