The first of the season's fine wool sales will be held in Christchurch on Thursday, with the quality of the clip described as "absolutely outstanding".

There will be a reasonable offering across all micron categories, Elders Primary Wool supply relationship manager Roger Fuller said.

The quality reflected the excellent conditions in the past 12 months for growing wool. That was particularly shown in length and strength measurements, which were very high.

While there would be "some ups and downs" - "you can never tell from one sale to the next" - interest was very good and the signs were still positive for good wool, he said.

North Otago Federated Farmers high country chairman Simon Williamson, of Omarama, believed the selling season looked reasonably strong "even though the dollar's up there". Markets seemed strong, demand seemed to be there and there were no reasons for wool not to be good quality, he said.
