Telecom has risen to the recent challenge by NZX chief executive Mark Weldon to include more women on boards of listed companies by appointing three to the board of New Chorus.

•  Telecom investors rattled by announcements

The board is Sue Sheldon (chairwoman), Anne Urlwin, Prue Flacks, Clayton Wakefield, Jon Hartley and Keith Turner.

Telecom chairman Wayne Boyd said the board of New Chorus reflected the diversity of experience that would be required as the company faced its future.

"The appointments recognise the attributes the new directors are able to bring to the job," Mr Boyd said.

"And at a time when there is a sharp focus on female participation at New Zealand's board tables, it is particularly heartening that 50% of the New Chorus board is female, including chair Sue Sheldon."

Ms Sheldon was appointed to the board of Telecom in June 2010.

Previously, she has held directorships in Meridian Energy, Ngai Tahu Holdings, Christchurch International Airport and Asure New Zealand Ltd.

She is a former chairwoman of the National Provident Fund.
