A Dunedin start-up company has its lens focused on the lucrative tourism market.

Destination Content had completed filming for tourism ventures in Dunedin, Oamaru and Auckland, and appointed sales affiliates in New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands, director James Hacon said.

Research showed 67% of leisure travellers used video in planning, and it was becoming an essential online marketing tool for any business in the tourism sector, he said.

The start-up company, which employs three people and four contractors, offered high definition video production filmed in a documentary style.

"We very much want candid responses," he said.

In addition to being able to distribute each video online, as a point of difference the company also offered subtitling for its videos.

Popular languages include Mandarin and German with subtitles popular with operators wanting to appeal to an international audience.

Dunedin clients to date include Larnach Castle, Elm Wildlife and the Customhouse restaurant, and the company is working on nine other video projects.

Being Dunedin-based had proved to be positive compared with its competitors in Australia and Auckland. It had access to cheaper rent, good facilities, and Dunedin was recognised as a hub for video production.

Fellow director Clive Copeman, who has worked for Dunedin-based production company NHNZ, is the company's head of production, with Andrew Whiley appointed as the sales and account manager.
