Stadium submissions drop by 494

The Forsyth Barr Stadium has waned spectacularly as a subject for those making annual-plan submissions to the Dunedin City Council this year.

Last year, the stadium was the subject of 500 submissions, and almost half of those who spoke took on the subject.

This year, council policy analyst Jane Nevill said six submissions were about the stadium: three for, and three against.

Submissions have now closed; 739 were received and 183 people wished to talk.

Last year, more than 800 submissions were made, and 240 people wished to speak.

Topics popular this year included the Botanic Garden redevelopment and Lovelock Ave realignment; access to Signal Hill reserve for mountain biking, and changes to the rating method for lifestyle properties, Ms Nevill said.

Public hearings begin on May 3.

submissions

Keep making submissions, keep them coming. It's at the very least disheartening when councils appear to dismiss out of hand any submissions that don't fit with their views but if we give up these councils and here I'm referring to both DCC & ORC, will take our silence as assent.

Exactly right

I suppose they think that the opposition to it has gone, just that there's no point in bothering typing to those who don't heed such things and treat them as token gestures. I didn't bother mentioning it this trip, I'm not even sure why I put in a submission at all this time round, should have waited another year. Parts were being made for the stadium well before it got the final council yes vote, and at the time submissions were still coming in last year, so again, token gestures were all the processes were, at the end of the day.

Stadium submissions

So, the number of submissions opposing the stadium have dropped. Maybe, just maybe, ratepayers have woken up and realised what a sham the submission process is, particularly when it's on a subject where councillors have already decided, like the Awatea St professional rugby stadium. I submitted when the $188m proposal was first mooted and was treated with total disdain. Why on earth would I repeat the exercise whilst the current councillors still hold office?
