Cheap airfares have been cleared for take-off and Dunedin
is the first airport in the country to offer Air New Zealand
travellers stand-by fares.
In the July trial, the airline is offering $59 stand-by fares
from Dunedin on direct services to Auckland, Wellington and
Christchurch.
Air New Zealand trialled student stand-by fares in September,
and again for three months ending last month, and decided to
extend the offer to all travellers from the city, commercial
general manager Jeff McDowall said.
"The level of enthusiasm from Otago students was great and we
were keen for others to have the opportunity to try out
stand-by fares as well; hence the reason we are starting this
offer in Dunedin where there is already awareness of the
concept of stand-by fares," he said.
As part of the deal, travellers must arrive at Dunedin
International Airport an hour before departure. Intending
travellers must buy a $59 ticket and will be notified 20
minutes before departure if a seat is available.
The offer covers just carry-on bags, not checked-in luggage.
The airline also plans to add more seats into and out of
Dunedin, plus will offer more grabaseat fares.
Dunedin International Airport chief executive John McCall
said the airline was offering a "very competitive fare",
likely to prove popular with travellers.
STAND-BY AIRFARES
• Be at Dunedin International Airport with your carry-on bag
( maximum 7kg) at least an hour before departure and register
at the check-in counter.
• Buy a $59 stand-by fare (available for Christchurch,
Wellington and Auckland), and the airline will let you know
20 minutes before departure if there is an available
seat.
• If you miss out, you can get a refund, or try for the next
one.
• Must buy a return ticket at your departure from Dunedin,
and be at the airport 60 minutes before departure.
• Stand-by fares are available at peak times, but you are
more likely to secure a seat on mid-week flights.
