More unsettled weather forecast for Dunedin

Strong, gusty winds buffeted Dunedin yesterday, bringing snow flurries to the hill suburbs and rain.

As predicted, gale southwesterly winds hit the city, with gusts of 103kmh at Taiaroa Head at 10am, MetService forecaster Derek Holland said.

Gusts of up to 61kmh were recorded at Dunedin Airport and 57kmh in the city.

Inland, winds were much less ferocious, with the highest gust recorded, 42kmh, at Roxburgh.

The worst of the southerly front had moved through the region by early afternoon, Mr Holland said.

Today, a frosty start was expected to give way to a cool, sunny day.

However, a strong northwest flow was expected to quickly spread over the country tomorrow, bringing gales to most of the east coast, including Otago.

MetService's severe weather outlook said there was a low risk of cold southeasterlies spreading into the southeast of the South Island on Monday, bringing heavy snowfalls to the region.

People planning outdoor activities, such as tramping or skiing, should be aware of the stormy weather approaching, MetService said.
