August weather warm, wet and cloudy

While the region might have had a very wet August, the figures could not compete with those in the North Island, Climate scientist Georgina Griffiths said.

"It was an extremely wet August across most of the country."

Double the amount of August rainfall was experienced in Coastal Otago and near record rainfall was recorded in Alexandra which received 36mm (142% of normal), its fourth-wettest August and on the 13th had its second-wettest August day with 17mm.

Similarly, Ranfurly received 53mm (185% of normal), also its fourth-wettest August.

Dunedin airport experienced 61mm (125% of normal), Dunedin, Musselburgh 68mm (103%), Queenstown 83mm (145mm), Middlemarch 41mm (143%), Wanaka 63mm (139%).

To put that in context, much of the East Coast of the North Island experienced about 300mm to 400mm in August, she said.

Dunedin was also the driest of the six main centres, recording 68mm and the coldest alongside Christchurch with an average temperature of 8degC.

Coastal Otago, from Oamaru to Balclutha, mostly experienced temperatures 1degC warmer than normal.

Dunedin temperatures were about normal.

In Oamaru, the minimum was 3.1degC, 1.5degC above normal - its fourth-warmest August.

Inland, minimum temperatures in Alexandra and Cromwell topped normal by 1.5degC and 2.4degC respectively.

Mean daily temperatures ranged from near normal at Dunedin airport 6.4degC, Musselburgh 8degC and Queenstown 5.2degC to the warmer-than-normal Alexandra on 6.6degC.

The high levels of cloud cover meant most of the Otago region experienced very low levels of sunshine over the period, Ms Griffiths said.
