Cable cars plan popular

Cable cars could well be closer to making a return to at least one Dunedin route following a meeting of the Dunedin Cable Car Trust that attracted more than 160 people on Saturday.

The trust felt its information meeting achieved the goal of assessing support for its project and proposes reintroducing a cable car run in Dunedin up High St, from the Exchange to Mornington.

Trust member Sue Russell said feedback was "totally positive" with comments such as "As soon as possible" and "We want it to happen" at the meeting.

The people attending the meeting at High Street School were of all ages and backgrounds, ranging from those reminiscing about the days when cable cars were used in the city, to young people who thought they would be great, sustainable transport, she said.

People were asked to fill in "intention of support" forms and write down the ideas or suggestions they had about the project.

Those would be collated in coming weeks.

"It was an opportunity to have a community discussion . . . and we've well and truly achieved that."

Evidence of support for the project would be presented to the Dunedin City Council, she said.
