$16,000 campaign for seat

Dunedin businessman Trevor Kempton spent $16,046.36 to help secure his seat on the Otago Regional Council.

It was one of the highest spends so far by a council candidate in Otago for the October 2010 local body elections and nearly $11,000 more than any other candidate for the regional council.

Candidates were required to detail what they spent and had donated towards their campaign and file that information with Dunedin electoral officer Pam Jordan by December 10.

Mr Kempton was the lowest polling successful candidate for the Dunedin constituency. Candidates could spend up to $55,000 on their campaign.

Highest-polling candidate Louise Croot spent $862.31. Second highest-polling candidate Gretchen Robertson spent $281.25.

Lowest-polling candidate in the Dunedin constituency Alan McDonald spent $4879.68, followed by successful Moeraki candidate Doug Brown ($3526.04).

Re-elected Dunstan candidates Gerry Eckhoff and Duncan Butcher spent $2158.92 and $385.10 respectively.

Unsuccessful candidate Andrew Rutherford spent $198.90.

No donations were listed.

Other candidate spending: Cr Michael Deaker $281.25, Edward Ellison $798.19, Cr Sam Neill $900; Cr Bryan Scott $1800.

Unsuccessful Moeraki candidate Ben Hopkins has yet to file a return.
