The $340,000 project took about 15 months to complete, used 100 tonnes of rock and contains 3500 plants which are native to the coastline and islands of the Mediterranean Sea.
Dunedin City Council botanic garden and cemeteries team leader Alan Matchett said Sir Anand was present in 2006 when the development plan for the garden was unveiled, so it was "fantastic" for him to be there at the opening.
