Febfast, an annual event in Australia since 2008, has raised more than $1.7 million for youth and drug services, with the inaugural New Zealand challenge set to begin next month.
Some of the funds raised from the Drug Foundation-organised event would go to a Dunedin-based counselling service which assists about 500 young people dealing with drug and alcohol issues each year.
Deb Fraser, director of Whakaata Tohu Tohu/Mirror Services, which is run by the Aroha Ki Te Tamariki Trust, said the service provided counselling for youths in the greater Dunedin area, and a day drug and alcohol programme for 13- to 17-year-olds from Otago and Southland.
She was delighted to receive funds from the inaugural Febfast, and urged people to support the month-long event.
Some Dunedin police officers had indicated they would take part, and Ms Fraser hoped role models from the province's sporting franchises would participate.
