Flood rating meetings

Suggested changes to the way landowners on the Taieri Plain are rated for their flood protection are to be explained to them at two public meetings next month.

The Otago Regional Council has reviewed its rating arrangements for flood protection and drainage in the area at the request of some landowners.

Changes to the rating classifications as a result of the review were to be consulted on as part of the council's draft annual plan in April.

Before that, the council would hold meetings in the Mosgiel Coronation Hall on March 7 and at the Momona Hall on March 8 at 7pm.

The three Taieri schemes (West Taieri drainage, East Taieri drainage and Lower Taieri flood control) each have different rating schemes.

Council director of corporate services Wayne Scott said the rates payable by users had been reviewed according to their respective classes of benefit and the basis of collecting rates had also been reassessed.

"Land value is the proposed basis for rating the drainage components of the East and West Taieri schemes, with capital value retained for rating the Lower Taieri flood scheme."
