Virtual stadium tours with new 3D model

Internet giant Google has joined forces with Dunedin Venues Management Ltd to produce a 3D model of the Forsyth Barr Stadium.

The model showcased the stadium inside and out, and could be used by customers or the curious to zoom around checking seats, the roof structure or views of the playing surface.

DVML chief executive David Davies said the model was now live on stadium's website but was still being developed.

"From our perspective, it was an opportunity to give people a fly-around, which allowed them to see where seats are, see what the perspective of the ground is.

"Anything we can do that will give people a better perspective of what the stadium looks like has got to be a good thing."

Google had approached DVML about producing the model late last year, to be used as part of its Google Earth service, Mr Davies said.

DVML contributed less than $10,000 towards the development cost, paid for from its existing marketing budget, Mr Davies said.

Google product manager for 3D Bruce Polderman said in a statement the "new and innovative" model would allow people from around New Zealand and the world to visit the stadium virtually.
