Decision soon on Carisbrook's fate

A final decision on the future of Dunedin's historic Carisbrook stadium should be only weeks away, with one last round of discussion on the issue to start soon.

Asked where the Carisbrook matter stood, Dunedin City Council finance, strategy and development committee chairman Cr Syd Brown said a resolution passed in January had been included for public consultation in the annual plan, and a decision would be made after deliberations.

The future of the stadium has been a matter of debate since it was bought by the council from the Otago Rugby Football Union after the decision to go ahead with the Forsyth Barr Stadium.

At draft annual plan hearings in January, councillors decided after prolonged debate to proceed with the sale of the stadium and adjoining car parks as industrial land.

Councillors heard then there were potential buyers interested in the properties, and the chances of breaking even on the council's $7 million purchase remained reasonable.

The issue was on the minds of 17 submission writers keen to have their say on the city council's annual plan for the next financial year.

The figures on submission numbers released by the council show John Wilson Ocean Dr to be the clear leader in terms of public interest.

Annual plan hearings are due to begin on May 4, with deliberations starting on May 11.
