Work is well advanced on replacing the leaking roof of the former Dunedin chief post office.

Distinction Hotel Group owner, Geoff Thomson, of Invercargill, said work was going "really well" and the roof was likely to be completed in the next few months.

An architect and interior designer were due to visit the site, but it was too early to confirm an opening date for the hotel, he said.

The company's website lists the Dunedin Distinction Hotel as "opening late 2011".
