More than 200 Malaysian students from universities around the country have gathered in Dunedin for the annual Malaysian university games.

The four-day games opened on Friday with a formal ceremony at the Dunedin Town Hall.

Otago Malaysian Students' Association president, Imran Fauzi (22), said the games were the "Malaysian version of the Olympics". He was "thrilled" to see them held here.

"It [was] a good opportunity for us to come together in these times of uncertainty. An event like this strengthens the bonds between [all Malaysians]."

Participants from all eight universities competed in sports, including handball, hockey and netball. Most were played at the Edgar Centre on Portsmouth Dr.
