Dunedin will have one National list MP after the election,
although leader John Key gave no indication of whether
newcomer Michael Woodhouse, who is campaigning in the Dunedin
North electorate, or second-time candidate Conway Powell, in
Dunedin South, would be given the nod.
Mr Key was in Dunedin yesterday to launch the campaigns of
the two men in front of about 100 supporters at the Robert
Burns Pub, on George St.
With the retirement of Katherine Rich, National would need a
representative in Dunedin and both men were of a high
calibre, he said.
The party list will be released on Sunday.
Dr Powell, who has a PhD in botany from the University of
Otago, was ranked 55 on the National Party list at the last
election.
Mr Woodhouse is the chief executive of Mercy Hospital,
Dunedin, a role he would step down from if he became an MP.
Mr Key said the aim was to "try and accommodate everyone" but
realistically the party would like at least one
representative from Dunedin.
