Rotary Park School No 2 team members (from left) Nathan Hanna (11), Chris Hawkins (9) and Asher Quin (10), won the years5 and 6 category with 100%.

They won the Otago Daily Times Extra! years 5 and 6 current events quiz last night, without getting a question wrong - 100 correct answers out of 100.

Given the high level of intelligence of Rotary Park School No 2 team members Nathan Hanna, Chris Hawkins and Asher Quin, we decided to quiz them ourselves.

"If you're so smart, who is going to win the Rugby World Cup?" we asked.

With lightning-quick reflexes, they proclaimed, "The All Blacks." Time will tell.

Asher said the team was totally surprised by the result, despite his being a member of the winning team last year.

"We're star struck. We didn't really expect to get 100%," he said.

Extra! editor and quiz co-ordinator Ivan Behrnes said it was the first time a years 5 and 6 team had achieved a perfect score and he was amazed at the calibre of competitors this year.

Nearly 180 pupils in 59 teams representing schools across the region participated in the event at Macandrew Intermediate.

Close behind Rotary Park No 2 was George Street Normal School (Lydia Christensen, Stephanie Patman and Sam Hewson) in second place with 97 points, and Grants Braes School (Liam McHenry, Emily Paterson and Macee Cuthbertson) in third place, with 96 points.

The years 7 and 8 quiz also came to a dramatic conclusion when Tahuna Intermediate No 11 and Columba College No 4 tied for first place.

Tahuna pupils Casey Brown, Bryn Monk and Braeden McIntyre won the tie-breaker by correctly naming Sir Paul Reeves as the former governor-general who died recently.

Casey said the win was made more special by the fact it was the 10th time the school had won the competition.

"It's amazing. This means a lot to our school."

Columba pupils Genevieve Walker-Radich (12), Isabella Lau (12) and Stephanie Jasperse (11) had to be content with second place, and Tahuna No 6 pupils Abby Spronken (12), Naveen Sivasankar (12) and Phoenix Agnew (13) were third.
