Lady Gaga, Bruce Springsteen and Radiohead are among top international acts emerging as possible music acts to follow Elton John's sell-out show at Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium.

Dunedin Venues Management Ltd chief executive David Davies confirmed "at least three sets of discussions" with promoters had been held since the November 25 show, which attracted 35,500 fans. The aim was to secure top international acts capable of filling a stadium to follow in Sir Elton's footsteps, Mr Davies said.

He believed "about 18" suitable acts were likely to be touring next year, and he was confident of luring "a couple" to Dunedin.

"I'm talking to agents about shows, but they're very guarded about what they are ... They don't reference the names [of acts], but we are talking about shows for next year.

"I'm confident that we're going to get a couple next year of the big ones that are touring."

Among the headline acts due to hit the road were Bruce Springsteen, Black Sabbath, Lady Gaga and Madonna, Mr Davies said.

An allegedly leaked copy of Madonna's itinerary showing an Auckland concert in March was initially denied by her management, but reports suggested an October concert at Mt Smart Stadium might yet be under negotiation.

Springsteen was also rumoured to be adding shows in Australia and Auckland later next year to his already-announced tour dates.

Mr Davies said there were also discussions about a possible tour by the Rolling Stones, while Coldplay and Radiohead would both be looking to tour on the back of new albums.

He would not put a timeline on any announcement, but was encouraged by the potential for shows next year.

"All of that is encouraging and the fact that people actually came to the [Sir Elton] show... was also encouraging, and the conversations since then have been encouraging.

"2012 looks a really, really exciting year."
