A cover style to rival some of the most recognised
magazine titles in the world has earned Andrew Jacombs (22) a
plaudit from an international industry design publication.
Mr Jacombs designs the distinctive covers for University of
Otago student magazine Critic and his efforts have attracted
the attention of industry style guide coverjunkie.
Three of Critic's covers from last year were nominated on the
coverjunkie website, which rates magazine covers from around
the world.
The cover of the final 2011 edition of Critic was selected in
the final 214 "best of" collection of magazine fronts
alongside some of the world's most leading titles, such as
TIME, Esquire, The New Yorker, Vogue, Sports Illustrated and
lift-outs from the New York Times and United Kingdom weekly
The Sunday Times.
Mr Jacombs said being picked in the annual collection was a
complete surprise. He knew about the blogsite through his
studies as a design major in the bachelor of consumer and
applied science degree.
"I had no idea I was going to be selected. The first I knew
was being sent the publication and opening it up.
"It's a huge honour, really. These are some major figures and
titles in the magazine industry and here is my work featured
alongside them." Critic was the only New Zealand magazine
cover to feature in the collection.
