Some of the 1200 runners who took part in the Stadium 2 Surf 10km fun run and walk set off from the Forsyth Barr Stadium yesterday morning. Public response to the run took organisers by surprise. They had expected about 500 to take part.

Event co-ordinator Matt Black was confident the New World-supported run would become an annual event.

Nathan Baxter won the men's division in a time of 33min 45sec, and Kirsty Morris was the women's winner in 40min 04sec.

Mr Black said the smiles on the faces of runners and walkers as they left the stadium were a good indication of its success, and "they were all talking about next year" once they finished.

The event raised money for Otago Athletics.
