Blackhead Quarries, of Dunedin, received a national award in Wellington last night for supporting two employees who serve in the Territorial Defence Force.

The company received the Territorial Forces Employer Support Council national employer of the year award.

It recognises employers who support reserve forces personnel in the workplace.

Blackhead Quarries was the supreme winner, chosen from seven regional winners around the country.

Blackhead Quarries employees Warrant Officer Gerry Costello and Sergeant Dan Bristow, members of the Otago Southland Battalion Group, helped with the 2011 Christchurch earthquake response, with the support of Blackhead Quarries.

Blackhead Quarries business manager Nigel Hodge said supporting the employees helped the company.

"We see it as a two-way thing. In our experience you get fantastic employees.

"[Defence personnel] have great discipline and a very good attitude to work. That rubs off well on the other staff."
