A better picture of the past of Hawkesbury Lagoonis expected to help form its future, lagoon committee chairwoman Shirley McKewen says.
The committee recently received $5000 from the Pacific Development and Conservation Trust which enabled it to commission sedimentation core sampling of the lagoon.
A University of Otago student was doing the work, which should provide a better understanding of the lagoon's history.
That work, alongside a report into water management due later this month, would guide future work.
The group also seeks funding for a study of the lagoon's bird life and the impact of changing water levels.
