As well as providing refuge from the weather for bus passengers, the Company Bay bus shelter now serves as a memorial to the late Broad Bay artist John Noakes.

Mr Noakes spent 15 years painting murals on 65 bus shelters around Dunedin, and is immortalised on the first to which he took a palette and paintbrush 24 years ago.

Dunedin artist Daniel Mead painted a portrait of Mr Noakes on one of the shelter's walls, and re-created Mr Noakes' original work from 1987 on the remaining walls. The work was commissioned by Keep Dunedin Beautiful as part of a wider beautification project.

The work was officially unveiled yesterday by Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull and Noakes' widow Jennepher, in conjunction with the start of this year's Paint New Zealand Beautiful week, which aims to free communities of graffiti.
