Otago residents were treated to a spot of lunar brilliance in cloudless skies at the weekend.

The "supermoon" is the closest and therefore biggest and brightest full moon of the year.

The moon comes to within 357,000km of Earth, about 24,600km closer than average.

It appears some 14% bigger than it does at its farthest distance from Earth and 30% brighter.

This photograph was taken from the Andersons Bay inlet, looking across southern Dunedin, about 6.30am yesterday.

The moon's distance from Earth varies because it follows an elliptical orbit.
