Severe weather forecast

Snow flurries to near sea level are predicted for coastal Otago and eastern Southland tonight and tomorrow morning.

A severe weather watch issued by the MetService said a southwest flow covering the South island was expected to strengthen winds today and could bring the snow flurries.

Forecaster Allister Gorman said winds about exposed coastal hills, from the Catlins to Otago Peninsula, were likely to rise to gale force this morning with gusts possibly approaching warning levels between noon and midnight.

The winds were expected to slowly ease during tomorrow and be followed by cold temperatures, leading to significant wind chills in exposed places.

People should keep a close eye on the forecasts in case the watch was upgraded to a warning, he said.

Showers and southerlies were predicted for Dunedin for the rest of the week, with sunshine not anticipated until next Monday.
