The Dunedin City Council finally managed to enjoy a game of rugby yesterday.

A crowd of 7427 attended the North Island v South Island match at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, realising a potential windfall of up to $25,000 for the DCC.

The match was pulled out of mothballs by the New Zealand Rugby Union as part of a recovery package for the debt-ridden Otago Rugby Football Union.

All money raised from the game will be used to defray $480,000 in ORFU debt, which was written off by the DCC and Dunedin Venue Management Ltd when the union was threatened with liquidation.

Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull said he was pleased with the outcome.

"It more than broke even, so we can be very content with that. It's certainly better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick," he said after the match yesterday.

"We're more than happy with the result. All the proceeds will be going to the DCC group."

DVML chief executive David Davies said it was too early to know how much the match raised.

"Based on our projections, we're on the right side of the ledger. But we're expecting five figures, rather than six," he said yesterday.

"From our perspective, everyone seemed to enjoy it. We're ... very appreciative of the support."

The match was won 32-24 by the South Island, while a Parliamentary XV beat a Police XV 17-14 in the curtain-raiser.
