Clones of Harry Potter, Barbie, and the Chipmunks all made an appearance at the annual RoboCup Challenge in Dunedin on Saturday.

Made mostly from Lego components, the robots were then dressed up for their debut on the dance floor for the theatre challenge of the cup.

The day attracted 96 primary and secondary pupils from around the city.

Otago Robots Education Committee chairman Donald Liddell said the day gave the children a platform to put their computing and mechanical skills to the test.

"It highlights them in a fun way."

They had to build the robots and programme them to do set tasks - dance in the theatre section, pick up a can in the search and rescue activity and get a soccer ball into the goal in the soccer game.

"The robots are very flexible so they decide how complex they want to make them."

The work the children do for the challenge was able to be used towards their unit standards at school, he said.
