Otago Daily Times cartoonist Garrick Tremain spoke about his work and gave details of his new book, 20 Years of Garrick Tremain at a New Zealand Book Month event at the Dunedin Public Library last night.

He kept an audience of about 100 entertained with stories about the grind of producing a daily cartoon, his unsuccessful attempt at retirement, how he became a cartoonist and the responses he gets.

While people ascribed a lot of power to cartoons, it was nonsense as they only reflected or mirrored the news of the day, he said.

However, they helped people who felt disenchanted, confused or powerless, feel like they were not alone.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

You can help us continue to bring you local news you can trust by becoming a supporter.
