Force Majeure Events International chief executive Darryl Tombleson said if 15,000 or more tickets sold for the November 17 rodeo at Forsyth Barr Stadium he would buy a first response medical emergency vehicle for the city.
"If we get that level of support from Dunedin, we want to give back to the community," he said.
Based in Sydney, Mr Tombleson was originally from Hawera, Taranaki and as a child spent "a couple of years" in hospital.
"I was quite ill when I was younger so I can relate to the need for emergency services," he said.
Mr Tombleson said he received quotes from a Hamilton manufacturer for a first response vehicle which would be "like a scaled-down ambulance".
It could cost between $100,000 and $250,000 depending on its medical "kit-out", he said.
The vehicle would enable paramedics to respond quickly to emergencies and provide assistance until ambulance crews arrived.
Mr Tombleson said he had discussed his plan with staff at Dunedin Hospital and would today meet members of the Southern District Health Board.
He had yet to consult St John, which provides ambulance services throughout New Zealand.
St John Waitaki district operations manager Glenn Cockburn said the organisation would welcome such a donation from Mr Tombleson or any other person.
"We would be very happy to talk with him and find the best way to ensure our community needs are met," Mr Cockburn said.
St John's fleet of emergency vehicles included those which responded first to medical emergencies and were then supported by an ambulance, which could transport patients to hospital.
The rapid response vehicles were driven by qualified paramedics and carried life-saving equipment.
Mr Tombleson said ticket sales for the Dunedin rodeo had been "quite steady" and he expected a rush of late sales in the fortnight before the event.
The three-hour rodeo will feature riders from the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand as well as Australian musicians, international horse and car stuntmen and a variety of other entertainers.
It will be the first time Dunedin has hosted the rodeo, which will be staged for a second time in Hamilton on November 24.
