A Mosgiel butchery and a Queenstown supermarket have the tastiest sausages in Otago.

Pork bratwurst by Agora - The Good Food Shop, in Mosgiel, won the international bratwurst/boerwors category in the 2012 Devro New Zealand Sausage Competition and Queenstown Wakatipu New World won the pork category with its pure pork sausage.

They were the only Otago-made snags to win gold in the annual competition, which has been running since 1994.

The supreme winner of the 450 snarlers judged by a panel of chefs, butchers and foodwriters in the three-day competition was a smoked kielbasa, from Island Bay and Strathmore Butcheries in Wellington.

"Sausage-making is a craft which New Zealand butchers have mastered to a very high standard," head judge Kerry Tyack said.

"Over the past few years, the competition has contributed to raising standards, as everyone benefits from the critique and this year is no exception."

Agora - The Good Food Shop owner Ross Hutchison said there was a simple recipe to making the perfect sausage: "Good ingredients".
