Colin Nicholls is not sure whether it was the Act New Zealand party signwriting that prompted thieves to steal his car and torch it on Saturday night.

The Act candidate for Dunedin South at this year's election said he parked the Ford Laser outside the Waterloo Hotel, in Caversham, on Saturday about 7.40pm while he and his wife had a meal.

When he came out of the hotel about 9.40pm, the car was gone.

He was phoned on Sunday morning by police, who said they found the burnt-out shell of the car in Green Island Bush Rd and were investigating.
