Spate of crashes in the South

A 37-year-old Christchurch man escaped injury after his car crashed off State Highway 1 and into a fence near Waihola yesterday afternoon. There were also crashes near Papakaio in North Otago and near Gore.

Senior Constable Steve Griffiths, of Milton, said emergency services were called about 3pm to a crash on State Highway 1, north of Waihola. He said initial indications were the driver of a sheep truck and trailer unit indicated left to pull into a farm driveway. A 37-year-old Christchurch man driving a Holden Commodore tried to overtake the truck on the left, and slid into a fence just off the road, he said. The man was not injured.

• A 57-year-old Gore man was taken to Gore Hospital by ambulance with minor injuries yesterday afternoon after the Downer tip-truck he was driving rolled on a sweeping right-hand bend on Knapdale Rd, about 3km west of Gore, Sergeant Ian Temple, of Gore, said. Police were yet to speak to the driver to determine the cause of the crash, he said.

• Two people injured in a two-car collision on the Waitaki Plains near Papakaio yesterday afternoon were flown to Dunedin Hospital in two helicopters.

One person was trapped inside a car when the fire service arrived at the corner of Seven Mile and Papakaio Rds, a fire communications spokesman said. The trapped person was cut from the car and both injured people were flown to Dunedin Hospital.
