Development unit wins international prize

The Dunedin City Council's economic development unit has won an international prize for its research support fund, which has provided $78,556 in the last three years to back bids for research and development that have attracted $17 million of funding for the city.

The city won the International Economic Development Council multi-year economic development programme award for the fund, which was introduced in 2005.

The economic development unit manages the fund, which helps develop applications for research groups from the University of Otago, the Otago Polytechnic, and business.

The fund contributes money to help researchers develop their funding applications.

Since the programme, the fund has provided $78,556 to back bids for $24.5 million, resulting in $17 million worth of research and development funding for the city.

For every $1 million in funding applied for, researchers obtained $690,000.

Economic development committee chairman John Bezett said he was "delighted" by the award, which was the result of work by unit bio-resources adviser Graham Strong.
