Cadbury is developing a new product in Dunedin, set to hit shelves later this year.

The revelation by Cadbury Dunedin site manager Judith Mair came as she detailed the latest changes to Cadbury's Dairy Milk block range, made in Tasmania.

The new 220g blocks, available from today, have a more rounded shape and come in soft plastic resealable packaging rather than the traditional cardboard and foil.

Ms Mair said although the new Dairy Milk blocks were launched in Australia a month ago, a new product was being made in Dunedin for New Zealand tastes.

She would not reveal what it was, but said it would be available by the end of the year.

''There is more to come. Watch this space.''

Cadbury's Dunedin factory was the ''centre for excellence'' in gifting and assortment, Ms Mair said.

Roses, Milk Tray and Continental boxed chocolates were made in Dunedin, as well as all marshmallow products including Easter eggs, Pinky Bars, Buzz Bars and Pineapple Lumps.

''Panned'' products such as Jaffas and Pebbles were also produced in the Dunedin factory, which last made chocolate blocks in 2009, Ms Mair said.
