The Otago SPCA has reaped the benefits of Grace Gardner's selfless approach to her 11th birthday party.

Grace (10), a St Clair School pupil, invited 40 friends to her jungle-themed party last Friday but instead of presents she asked them to bring petfood.

She had hoped to fill a fish-bin with donations but instead had enough to fill the boot of the family car, the contents of which were dropped off at the SPCA yesterday by Grace and her mother, Chanel.

When Grace stacked the petfood in the cupboards yesterday she was surprised at how little supplied petfood the shelter had. She was happy with her decision to ask for donations, she said.

SPCA Otago executive officer Sophie McSkimming said the shelter was thankful for the petfood.

''It's a fantastic thing for a kid to do.''

Grace turns 11 tomorrow.
