Willowbank station firefighters spray foam on to a burning logging harvester on Mt Cargill, Dunedin, yesterday.
The Harland Brothers Logging harvester was ''well on fire'' when emergency services arrived at the scene at 2.30pm, Willowbank Senior Station Officer Robbie Torrance said last night.
The harvester was badly damaged.
''It was down a gully through scrub and we had quite an effort getting water to it. We had to lay out about 600m of hose. Each truck has 1400 litres of water in its tank and it took four tanks before we considered it was out,'' he said.
''It was well on fire when we got there. The first truck basically held it [the fire] until the second truck got there and put foam on it.
"It looks like one of the hydraulic hoses on the harvester might have split and sprayed oil everywhere. It was pretty badly damaged. I don't think they'll be using it tomorrow, anyway.''
The fire took two hours to control and was attended by three units from the Willowbank station.
