Westerlies then fine spring November days

Typical spring westerly winds are expected to continue in coming weeks, with the odd spell of rain, MetService's seasonal forecast says.

On the flip side, some ''nice-sized'' anticyclones were expected to bring some fine spring days and become more of a feature in November, it said.

''Some frosty nights will still be possible especially down south.''

The possibility of a brief cold southerly blast could not be completely ruled out, especially when lows deepened off to the southeast of New Zealand.

Niwa's seasonal climate outlook for October to December said after another warm quarter, near or above average temperatures were expected to continue across the country. Sea surface temperatures were expected to remain above average overall around New Zealand.

Otago temperatures were likely to be near or above average while rainfall, soil moisture and river flows were most likely to be in the near-normal range.
