Book Bus review a possibility

Plans for a South Dunedin community complex - including a library - could spell the end for some of the city's urban Book Bus routes, a Dunedin City Council manager says.

The idea was floated by council arts and culture group manager Bernie Hawke during debate about a South Dunedin library at yesterday's 2014-15 pre-draft annual plan meeting.

Mr Hawke, responding to a question from Cr Jinty MacTavish, said any vote to proceed with a South Dunedin library development would also trigger a rethink of parts of the Book Bus service.

While he would not necessarily recommend axing the service completely, ''certainly some of the urban stops could be reviewed'', he said.

''There may be an opportunity to reduce costs,'' he indicated.

The service relied on two vehicles that were both more than 20 years old, and beyond due for replacement, he said.

While both remained mechanically sound, it might also be appropriate to consider replacing one or both of them, or replacing both with one new vehicle, he said.

''There are a number of different options out there for mobile library service delivery,'' he said.
