Theatre company gets $30,000 grant

Dunedin's Ake Ake Theatre Company has been awarded $30,000 funding for a World War 1 project.

Sisters in Arms is a collaboration with Serbian actor Sanja Krsmanovic Tasic, which honours the role of women on the front lines of World War 1.

The production will focus on two of New Zealand's first female war surgeons, Dr Jessie Scott and Dr Agnes Bennett, who served on the Serbian Front, and decorated Serbian Army soldier Sergeant Sofija Jovanovic.

Sisters in Arms will combine theatre, music and dance and premiere at Bitef Polyphony arts festival in Serbia in September, before being performed at Arts Festival Dunedin in October.

It was one of three productions to receive funding through the First World War Centenary Co-Commissioning Fund, which honours New Zealand's contribution to World War 1.

Grants were also awarded for new works by Auckland choreographer Lemi Ponifasio and Wellington composer Gareth Farr.
