People cross Highgate, Dunedin, at a set of new pedestrian-operated traffic lights near Kaikorai School.

The lights, which cost the Dunedin City Council $103,700, were installed because of concerns about the safety of schoolchildren crossing the busy thoroughfare, which becomes even busier around the start and finish of the school day.

Even parents volunteering to oversee the pedestrian crossing during morning and afternoon school runs had been involved in near misses when stepping out to stop traffic.

It has taken about a month to install the lights, which were switched on on Tuesday afternoon.
