Juggling medical training with running a charity aimed at helping New Zealand children living in poverty is a struggle for Briar Hunter.

Ms Hunter, a fourth-year medical student at Otago University, co-founded Choose Kids at the beginning of last year after hearing just how many children were living in poverty and realising she could do something about it.

Since then the charity has worked to raise awareness about child poverty and for the last year has run fortnightly cook-ups, where students cook upwards of 50 meals for underprivileged children.

Last night, she, along with members of Te Roopu Maori (Maori Students' Association) members, cooked Moroccan chickpea and pumpkin curry. Despite at times struggling with her workload, her passion for the cause kept her going.

''I often think maybe I don't have time to keep this up, but then it's not something that I am prepared to stop,'' she said.

The cook-ups, while important, were not the main focus of the group.

''In the long run, we want to make it so not as many children are in poverty, but we think that we should do something now for those who are.''

To raise awareness and advocate on behalf of children living in poverty, the group had invited speakers to talk to students and ran a political panel at which representatives of different parties said what they were doing to tackle poverty.

Because child poverty was not visible to many students, there was a worry it was not something they thought about,''It's more of a hidden poverty.

"You don't have a lot of homeless people, but you might have 15 people living in a three-bedroom house.''
