$10m property sell-off possible

Houses, empty sections and parkland are among 149 parcels of property across Dunedin being considered for sale, as the city council looks to add $10 million to its coffers.

The council released its ''work in progress'' list after a Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act request from the Otago Daily Times.

The list includes houses in North Dunedin worth almost $500,000, and a park in Portobello. Council infrastructure and networks general manager Tony Avery yesterday said the list was a starting point.

''There's no presumption that because they are on that list they will automatically be sold,'' he said.

''There's a process to work through.

''The list represents an initial list, and there's a lot of work to be done around verifying whether all of those bits of land are surplus or not.''

In January, it emerged a council plan to sell surplus land and property during the next two to three years was expected to raise about $10 million.

That followed a survey of property used by all council departments.

Surplus property identified included leftover areas bought to widen roads and unneeded land at the edge of reservoirs.

Some property was difficult to value because of its size or location, and the biggest piece might be worth several hundred thousand dollars.

The council declined at the time to make the list public because of commercial sensitivities, but said any potentially contentious sales would be brought to the council first.

But in August, the council pulled out of a plan to sell a South Dunedin car park near the Mayfair Theatre, after an uproar in the suburb over a lack of consultation.

That followed earlier anger from Caledonian Bowling Club members after the council announced it would sell the Andersons Bay Rd land on which the 135-year-old club sits.

The list released this week showed properties from across the city being considered for sale, as well as land in Mosgiel, Middlemarch, Waikouaiti, Warrington and other rural areas.

Properties in the central city included two houses beside Logan Park: 113 Harbour Tce, with a capital value of $415,000, and 183 Dundas St, with a capital value of $460,000.

Both were listed as being owned by the council's community and recreation services department.

Mr Avery said both had been bought as part of the Logan Park development plan.

One was bought ''many years ago because there was an accessway being planned'', while the other gave ''some options around the development''.

The council was coming back to the Logan Park development plan, and the properties were being held until decisions on its future were made, he said.

Mr Avery said some properties were ''open green spaces'' used for a variety of purposes.

''For a number it will potentially require community consultation about the sites; other bits might be only of interest to particular land owners.

On a Portobello park site, he said: ''That sort of green space, we would need to consult with the community about what it's used for and its values and things.''

Only after that would a decision be made.
