Firearm concerns led to arrest over ammunition

A phone call from a person concerned that a man might be armed with a firearm resulted in the arrest of two men in Dunedin.

The call to police was made after a man, who appeared to be drunk, arrived at Mobil Forbury in Hillside Rd in a car about 4am on Wednesday, Sergeant Kane Shaw said.

What was thought to be a firearm was spotted in the car.

Police followed the vehicle to a Stafford St address, but were unable to locate any weapon.

Unsecured ammunition was found at the property, and the 43-year-old was charged under the Arms Act.

The alleged offender is to appear in the Dunedin District Court next week.

Sgt Shaw said it was important people stored ammunition and firearms securely.

''And if you mix alcohol and/or drugs it can be a volatile situation.''

A 54-year-old man at the address was charged with possessing cannabis and is to appear in court next month.
