Queen Mary Maternity has 'very high security '

Dunedin's Queen Mary Maternity Hospital has a ''rigorous and high security protocol'', although it was not clear last night whether security would be reviewed following the alleged kidnapping of a baby in Auckland.

The Southern District Health Board was among health boards yesterday saying they had tight security measures to protect babies on maternity wards.

Most wards were locked down after hours and some required keypad entry.

A Southern District Health Board spokesman said Queen Mary had ''very high security''.

''It's got a locked door, all those sort of things.

''It's the one place in the hospital even my security card won't work.''

He was not sure, late yesterday, whether a review was being considered.

''What I can tell you is the unit has rigorous and high security protocol.''
