Crews called out to suspicious fires

Fire crews attended a ''string'' of suspicious fires in South Dunedin on Saturday morning, St Kilda Senior Station Officer Ben Pitelen said.

''We don't know if they were related. They quite likely were.''

A Fire Service southern communications spokesman said crews from St Kilda and Dunedin stations were called to Oxford St about 1.50am on Saturday to a van fire and a fire on a logging truck wheel.

A dry powder fire extinguisher was used to put out the fires, he said.

An hour later, the St Kilda crew were called to a fence fire in Grove St.

Southern District Command Centre deployment co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said police investigated the fire on Saturday. Inquires were continuing.

The suspicious fires in Grove St damaged a fence in front of a house and a letterbox of a neighbouring house, Snr Sgt Brown said.
