Focus on consultation

The Dunedin City Council is to consult the community on how it consults the community.

A draft ''significance and engagement policy'' will be considered by councillors at the community and environment committee meeting today. If the draft policy is approved, the community will be asked for feedback on the draft.

The council's acting services and development general manager, Nicola Pinfold, said the draft policy was developed to meet the requirements of changes to the Local Government Act.

It was based on other councils' policies and feedback from local councillors, council departments and community feedback from past consultations.

It outlined a process for defining how significant a decision was and how and when the community could expect to be consulted. If the draft policy is approved, the council will consult the community until November 10.
